AQUANAUT JAMES CAMERON FINDS DEEP SEA LIFE

CAMERON FINDS WEIRD DEEP SEA LIFE : LIVE SCIENCE from December 6, 2012  Live Science

...The discovery of microbial mats — bizarre-looking, filament- like clumps of microorganisms — living off chemicals from altered rocks 35,803 feet (10,912 meters) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean comes from samples and video collected by an unmanned lander, part of movie director James Cameron's mission to the bottom of the Mariana Trench..."

SOLVING DNA OF GREAT WHITE MAY HELP PRESERVE SPECIES

WHOSE YOUR DADDY? GREAT WHITE SHARKS PARENT FOUND  link to Fox News article here!

..."Great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are the biggest meat-eating shark in the world, with some reaching more than 20 feet long and weighing more than 5,000 pounds. They hunt in more of the world's seas than any other sharks, ranging across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, from the cold waters near the Antarctic to the tropical waters near the equator, cruising up to 43 miles per hour in pursuit of prey.

Their numbers are rapidly declining worldwide, however, mostly because of accidental entanglement in fishing nets.

''You just really don't get fossil sharks preserved this nicely anywhere in the world.'

- Dana Ehret, a vertebrate paleontologist at Monmouth University

The evolutionary history of the great white has been contested by paleontologists for 150 years. They were originally classified as direct relatives of megatooth sharks such as the extinct Carcharocles megalodon, the largest carnivorous shark that ever lived.

Fossils of a newfound species of shark, Carcharodon hubbelli, suggest the modern great white actually may have descended from broad-toothed mako sharks. Researchers say the newfound species represents a possible midway point in the evolution from one to the other."

THE TRIANGLE : THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE :

Bryan Singer and Dean Devlin present THE TRIANGLE.

A two DVD set, this is a science fiction "event" with an all star cast that filled my evening with adventure. I settled back on the sofa with some hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn and watched without getting up - except to put in the second DVD.

The special effects were outstanding and the proposition - that time and space are different enough in the Bermuda Triangle that old Spanish ships from hundreds of years ago, World War II fighter planes, and modern ships and planes are all out there somewhere, in some sort of time whirl, highly interesting.

Tied in with a navy experiment intended to make ships invisible, there is a lot of science fact here that is moved towards science fiction.

In the story a Green Peace whaling vessel in a conflict with a whaler when all are lost or disappeared except for one person who is haunted by the memories.  The trouble is, the group hired by the owner of a huge fleet of cargo ships who has lost multimillion dollar vessels in the Bermuda Triangle, which includes a couple scientists as well as a journalist and a psychic, are, like the surviving Green Peace person, are having visions, hallucinations, memories or projections that are confusing them.

Featuring Eric Stoltz, Catherine Bell, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bruce Davidson, Micheal Rodgers, Lisa Brenner, Sam Neill, and many other actors, there's a human story along with the fast action.

REMEMBER to RECYCLE!

If there is ONE THING THAT YOU CAN DO to help keep the ocean environment healthy, to prevent sea life from dying out, that is RECYCLING, in particular the recycling of PLASTICS!  In past posts of this blog, SIRENS LINK TO SEA, I've linked to sites about THE SEA OF PLASTIC in the PACIFIC OCEAN, which is said to be the SIZE OF TEXAS!

Here is what happens when you throw a bottle or can on the sidewalk or street instead of putting it in a recycling garbage bin or taking it to a local recycling center.  The street sweepers come and brush debris and bottles are moved towards storm drains that lead to the ocean.  (In the case of Los Angeles, this means polluting the Santa Monica Bay!)  Plastics, which float, follow the currents, and end up in the sea of plastic, which, in my opinion, needs to be mined!

Back in the day, people did not carry water to drink with them on a daily basis.  They might take water in a canteen when they went hiking.  I know this may sound unbelievable, but people actually drank plenty of water at home, took beverages to school in thermoses, and no one seemed to be worried about dying from thirst! Maybe the earth is heating up, and maybe we are more aware that we need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, but glasses do not mean massive containers of soda!  Glasses are about 8 ounces, so that's about 64 ounces of water a day.

Pure water is hydrating and the best beverage we can drink.  Please do your part and responsibly discard your plastic, aluminum, and glass containers!

SHARK FINNING (CUTTING OFF FINS FOR SOUP and MEDICINE) KILL 70 MILLION SHARKS A YEAR

SHARK FINNING ARTICLE FROM DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMERATS

"Fishermen across the globe kill as many as 70 million sharks each year for their fins, which can sell for $700 a pound (450 grams), while the soup prized for Chinese banquets and weddings can cost $100 a bowl. The fin trade has devastated several species including hammerheads, oceanic whitetip, blue, threshers and silky and contributed to 181 shark and ray species being listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as threatened with extinction.
The trade is legal, though efforts are being made to ban the practice of "finning" – hacking the fins off of sharks and throwing the rest overboard, often while they are still alive. Four years ago, under international pressure, the UAE joined the growing number of countries banning the practice.

JULIAN LENNON PRODUCTION : WHALEDREAMERS : EXCELLENT FILM

I watched this one twice, it was just excellent.  The photography, the story... The story is about the aboriginal people of Australia who in their dreaming state communicate with the whales.

I've discovered this link while swimming around the net : WHALEDREAMERS OFFICIAL SITE

Small excerpt : "There are more than 80 species of Whales in the world and they have been in danger of being slaughtered for many years. This is a travesty for more than the obvious reasons so we need to protect the whale population, it’s our responsibility. Whales are very intelligent creatures. Research has shown they are very intuitive as to whether or not a different species from their own is considered off limits to mate. Their families bond together as human families do and this includes the great-grandchildren on up to the grandfathers..."

SUPERSTORM SANDY HEADING TO THE EAST COAST

Thousands of articles are on the net, hundreds of radio stations and television stations are following SUPERSTORM SANDY, which may be a historic event.  Listening to the radio this morning I heard that the streets of New York City are near deserted.  Most people are taking the storm seriously.  Electrical power may be distrupted, as is transportation services.  If you know of someone who is living alone, a senior citizen perhaps, or someone who is stranded and can't get to their pets, please contact that person before the storm hits.

"Hsi Kai was plucked from a Cantonese flower boat by the powerful Chinese Pirate Zheng Yi who married her-and she took command his already powerful fleet when he died in a typhoon. She was the one who built the fleet up to over 50,000 men and challenged for control of the S. China Sea-while some might attribute her success to luck, others would argue (and we would agree with them) that skill & talent were what made her so successful!"

THE REEF : BASED ON A TRUE STORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN GREAT BARRIER REEF

THE REEF, subtitle, PRAY THAT YOU DROWN FIRST, is an Australian film, based on the true story of a man named Ray Boundy, who was the only survivor of a boat wreck.  A group of people out for a pleasure cruise intended to deliver a boat, finds themselves taking the risk of swimming about twelve miles to Turtle Island, but in doing so they face Great White sharks.  This film is said to be scarier than Jaws, but it wasn't to me and it seemed to stop too short.  I kept wondering what was going to happen when they got to Turtle Island which appeared to be in the distance.  It was still worth watching though.

I thought about survival at sea and survival of ship wrecks and surviving on deserted islands.

The film was put out in 2012 by Lightening Entertainment and Screen Australia.

"Based on straight-line cuts visible around the eye, we believe it was removed by a fisherman and discarded."

CROP CIRCLES UNDER THE SEA NEAR JAPAN? SCIENCE SAYS NO!

MYSTERY SOLVED?
"Ookata dubbed his new find the "mystery circle" and was shocked to find out that a single puffer fish, no more than a few inches long, had created the circles using just one fin. The tiny fish works tirelessly day and night to complete the design. While the circled sculpture is beautiful to look at, Ookata and his crew learned that the fish's creation maintained a dual purpose. Female fish are attracted to the ridges and valleys left in the sand, and they deposit their eggs in the center. The eggs are then shielded from the ocean currents, as the higher points of the sculpture create a barrier to protect them. The more ridges a sculpture contains, the more likely it will attract the females of the species."

THE GUARDIAN : A FILM STARING KEVIN COSTNER and ASHTON KUTCHER

"The Guardian" is a film about the United States COAST GUARD and the role they play in dangerous rescues at sea. Hundreds of boats of all sizes and types get in trouble while at sea and sink, and often their only hope is a rescue by Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers, who are dropped from about 20 feet into the sea and do their selfless best to rescue those who are in trouble. Sometimes they have to decide in a practical way who will live and who will be left to die, depending on how much time they have and the conditions they encounter. This movie focuses on an old timer, a legend, who is starting to run out of the energy and luck it takes to keep doing the job. He becomes an instructor at the Coast Guard academy where his somewhat unconventional methods to train - and eliminate those who can't do the job - put candidates into conditions they might encounter at sea. They must tread water for an hour, experience hypothermia, and what it is to have someone you're rescuing fight you because they are panicking. This movie was so interesting I didn't get up for snacks. I was totally into it. Now I don't want to ruin this movie for you by giving a play by play account of what happens but I think you may find the spiritual aspect of it also compelling!

GOLDFISH : THE FIRST LIVE FISH MANY OF US SEE

The first live fish many of us ever meet, as kids when we get a goldfish from the pet shop and put him or her in a glass jar or tank, is the goldfish. VACATIONING AT THE BEACH AND WONDERING ABOUT THE RISE IN SEA LEVELS

So many people, especially those who live inland and indoors most of the year, go to the sea - the ocean - on vacation.

One of the most interesting news these days is the subject of "Global Warming."

Some people believe that while there is evidence of Global Warming, it is a natural cycle of nature that we should have extremely hot summers, like the one we're having now that's causing massive electric power outages, and we might actually be heading for another Ice Age, as a response from Mother Earth to all the melting.

Others believe it is human occupation and use of the earth, in particular pollution from burning fossil fuels, that is causing an unprecedented warming, a hole in the protective ozone layer of our atmosphere, and a rise in temperatures which will, of course, also effect the sea.

I'll be posting a bit on the rise in sea levels this month!

MYSTERY DISK IN THE BALTIC SEA : OCEAN EXPLORERS

So many articles about this in the media... a MYSTERY DISK that demands scientific exploration.

2012-06-15
NEWS RELEASE
15/6/2012, PRESS RELEASE
THE TREASURE HUNTERS, OCEAN X TEAM, DISCOVERED SOMETHING UNIQUE WHEN THEY DOVE DOWN TO THE MYSTERIOUS CIRCLE-SHAPED OBJECT IN THE BALTIC SEA
Treasure hunters confirm they have found something abnormal in the seabed
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 15, 2012
The Ocean X Team dove down to the circle-shaped object in the Baltic Sea and met something they never experienced before. First they thought it was just stone or a rock cliff, but after further observations the object appeared more as a huge mushroom, rising 3-4 meters/10-13 feet from the seabed, with rounded sides and rugged edges. The object had an egg shaped hole leading into it from the top, as an opening. On top of the object they also found strange stone circle formations, almost looking like small fireplaces. The stones were covered in something resembling soot.

“During my 20-year diving career, including 6000 dives, I have never seen anything like this. Normally stones don’t burn. I can’t explain what we saw, and I went down there to answer questions, but I came up with even more questions “, says Stefan Hogeborn, one of the divers at Ocean X Team.
The path to the object itself can be described as a runway or a downhill path that is flattened at the seabed with the object at the end of it.

“First we thought this was only stone, but this is something else. And since no volcanic activity has ever been reported in the Baltic Sea the find becomes even stranger. As laymen we can only speculate how this is made by nature, but this is the strangest thing I have ever experienced as a professional diver“, continues Peter Lindberg, one of the founder Ocean X Team.

SEA CREATURES FROM JAPANESE TSUNAMI REACHES U.S.

JEFF BARNARD of AP Press reports on the dock that arrived on the west coast of the U.S. bringing sea creatures that could invade the ecology here.

"Along for the ride were hundreds of millions of individual organisms, including a tiny species of crab, a species of algae, and a little starfish all native to Japan that have scientists concerned if they get a chance to spread out on the West Coast.

"This is a very clear threat," said John Chapman, a research scientist at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore., where the dock washed up early Tuesday. "... It's incredibly difficult to predict what will happen next."

A dozen volunteers scraped the dock clean of marine organisms and sterilized it with torches Thursday to prevent the spread of invasive species, said Chris Havel, spokesman for the state Department of Parks and Recreation, which is overseeing the dock's fate."

MINING THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH : PLASTIC IS IN ALL THE OCEANS :

"Today on World Oceans Day we celebrate and honor oceans by recognizing the underwater footprint we all unknowingly leave behind.

When it comes to plastic, what you throw away doesn't really go away. This was evident on my journey to one of the most remote ends of the earth - the Midway Atoll. This small piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near the northwestern end of the Hawaiian archipelago was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, and should have been the most pristine. There are no cars, streets, lights or air pollution, yet I couldn't escape the remnants of modern society littered everywhere in the form of plastic."

DEEP WATER : THE TRUE STORY OF DONALD CROWHURST

I watched this documentary film a second time, picking up more nuances! Donald Crowhurst was a weekend sailor in a catamaran who decided to join a challenge to sail around the world in whatever kind of boat with more experienced sailors. He had a wife and children to consider, but he wanted to challenge himself. I realized watching this that he probably knew he was in over his head before he left, seems there were a lot of things that were going wrong even before he set out. Maybe he knew he wouldn't make it, but besides the challenge of navigating treacherous oceans, there was the fact that he'd made financial commitments that would devastate his family and his business if he didn't set sail and stay in the race. So, once at sea and miserably behind, he began to cheat. In the end his ship's log tells the whole truth. His wife and best friend, now in their senior years, explain what they went through on land, wondering where and how he was. The question is, how much should we loose due to our own humiliation? Did he go mad? determine there is no God while subject to nature?

ALIENS OF THE DEEP : AN ADVENTURE TO UNLOCK THE SECRETS NOT ONLY OF THE SEA BUT THE WHOLE UNIVERSE!

ALIENS OF THE DEEP, directed by James Cameron (of Titanic fame) and Steven Quale, is about how scientists are learning about the possibility of life on other planets, perhaps Mars, or the satellite of Jupiter called Europa which may have oceans trapped under ice, through the study of sea life so far down that sunlight does not reach and photosynthesis cannot happen. If there is no dependency on life because of the sunlight or photosynthesis, then what lives so far below the sea?

The answer is, clams, shrimp, and various forms of fish, squid, and octopus. Get this! Some of them are living near vents spewing water so hot it could melt the specially designed mini subs that are capable of dealing with life threatening water pressure.

If these creatures can defy what we "know" like they ought to be dead rather than thriving, WHY SHOULD WE ASSUME THAT LIFE CANNOT EXIST on other planets where is severely hot or cold. Perhaps there is sea life under the frozen ice in oceans that do not have access to any form of light on other planets.

You will love this film for it's beauty and science, and you'll learn about new specialties in the sciences and how they are working together TO PREPARE FOR A VISIT TO ANOTHER PLANET.

ATLANTIC WHALES (CANADA) SITE LINKED HERE

"The waters off Newfoundland and Labrador are among the most productive portions of the Earth's ocean. During the spring and summer, some of the planet's largest gatherings of whales, seals and seabirds come to feed in these coastal and offshore waters along North America's eastern edge. For over 500 years some of the planet's most intensive human fisheries have also taken place here...

"People are not always good at sustainably managing the ocean's resources. Over the past few hundred years the Atlantic grey whale was wiped out while the right and bowhead whales have been removed from most of their former range. Other whales including fins, blues, orcas and humpbacks underwent dramatic population reductions at the hands and harpoons of 20th century whalers. DO WHALES BEACH THEMSELVES TO COMMIT SUICIDE : 61 BEACHED IN NEW ZEALAND

Brian Palmer of the site Slate, has done a fine job of writing about the 61 whales who beached themselves on Opoutere Beach in New Zealand last November. You may have been watching the news about other whales that have beached themselves. Usually whale loving volunteers show up to drench them with water, to try and keep them alive until the tide comes in. Once beached it is very difficult to move a whale. Even the whale has trouble moving on land. It's not their natural environment.

"Is suicide a thing in the animal kingdom?
Sort of. There is plenty of evidence that animals engage in self-destructive behavior."

This article focuses on the science...

HAPPY THIRD BIRTHDAY TO SIRENS LINK TO SEA!

Can I believe it? I started this blog THREE years ago! In that time it seems that awareness about ocean ecology has increased quite a bit! I hope this blog has been a small part of that increasing awareness. As I page through old posts I see some good stuff. Most of the links are still active and informative.

These days I've been obsessed with the story that's all over the news about the Cruise Ship called the Costa Concordia which is laying off the coast of Italy on it's side after over 4000 people successfully got to shore, but in which at least 17 people died, with a dozen or so unaccounted for. The ship contains fuel that must be removed so that it doesn't pollute the waters which are brimming with sea life including whales. Estimates about how long it will take to remove this oil and the ship are that it could take as long as a whole year.

Over the next few months I'll be looking at the old posts and checking links and will possibly be moving to a new Google Blogger Template, with an emphasis on a side bar that will move you to those links. You can check on Pages to see where I am in the undating.

As usual, if you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments, please leave them for me!
