Painted in 1901 Now at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, John Willian Waterhouse's early 20th century painting of the mermaid combing her long hair is one of the now classic images of these mythological (some say once-upon-a-time real) beings, once frequently reproduced.

DID YOU KNOW? STARBUCKS TWO TAILERS ARE MESULINS

The Starbucks logo with the "mermaid" with two legs is actually a mesaline. Check out "A Dictionary of Symbols" by J.E. Cirlot. Sirens come in two types... the half-bird and half woman type, and the half fish and half woman type, called a mermaid. The ancient Greeks though both types were busy seducing mariners with promises of sex. Of course, cuter stories via Disney movies, and cartoons, have given mermaids other reputations.
