ROCKY THE 27 POUND MAINE LOBSTER DONATED TO AQUARIUM

Breaking news. Prices on lobster are down, but a fisherman decided to donate "Rocky" since any lobster over 3 pounds is liable to be tough meat. That means Rocky is an "old geezer." Amy Hubbard is the writer for the LA Times newspaper, linked here, that tells the tale.

"Robert Malone went fishing for shrimp and pulled in a surprise: a 27-pound Maine lobster that could never be viewed as shrimpy."

EARTHTRUST IS USING DNA TO SAVE THE WHALES

"Earthtrust's Saving Whales With DNA Project is a cutting-edge strategy for ending the global black market in whale meat through the use of DNA analysis... DNA analysis is the only practical way to verify if a product in the marketplace is a "legitimate" whale species (under IWC regulations) or if it is from a highly endangered species."

ATLANTIC WHALES (CANADA) SITE LINKED HERE

"The waters off Newfoundland and Labrador are among the most productive portions of the Earth's ocean. During the spring and summer, some of the planet's largest gatherings of whales, seals and seabirds come to feed in these coastal and offshore waters along North America's eastern edge. For over 500 years some of the planet's most intensive human fisheries have also taken place here...

"People are not always good at sustainably managing the ocean's resources. Over the past few hundred years the Atlantic grey whale was wiped out while the right and bowhead whales have been removed from most of their former range. Other whales including fins, blues, orcas and humpbacks underwent dramatic population reductions at the hands and harpoons of 20th century whalers. In the case of the orcas, the military even used them for target practice...

PILOT WHALES BEACHED ON FAREWELL SPIT NEW ZEALAND

Farewell Spit is another New Zealand Beach where whales, this time 99 of them, beached themselves. This is the news as of January 26th, written by Dominique Schwartz, of ABC news.

The animals are being put down (euthanized) because rescuers cannot get them to move. About 17 of them made it back to the sea. 33 of them tried but re-beached themselves elsewhere.

DO WHALES BEACH THEMSELVES TO COMMIT SUICIDE : 61 BEACHED IN NEW ZEALAND

Brian Palmer of the site Slate, has done a fine job of writing about the 61 whales who beached themselves on Opoutere Beach in New Zealand last November. You may have been watching the news about other whales that have beached themselves. Usually whale loving volunteers show up to drench them with water, to try and keep them alive until the tide comes in. Once beached it is very difficult to move a whale. Even the whale has trouble moving on land. It's not their natural environment.

"Is suicide a thing in the animal kingdom?
Sort of. There is plenty of evidence that animals engage in self-destructive behavior."

HAPPY THIRD BIRTHDAY TO SIRENS LINK TO SEA!

Can I believe it? I started this blog THREE years ago! In that time it seems that awareness about ocean ecology has increased quite a bit! I hope this blog has been a small part of that increasing awareness. As I page through old posts I see some good stuff. Most of the links are still active and informative.

These days I've been obsessed with the story that's all over the news about the Cruise Ship called the Costa Concordia which is laying off the coast of Italy on it's side after over 4000 people successfully got to shore, but in which at least 17 people died, with a dozen or so unaccounted for. The ship contains fuel that must be removed so that it doesn't pollute the waters which are brimming with sea life including whales. Estimates about how long it will take to remove this oil and the ship are that it could take as long as a whole year.

Over the next few months I'll be looking at the old posts and checking links and will possibly be moving to a new Google Blogger Template, with an emphasis on a side bar that will move you to those links. You can check on Pages to see where I am in the undating.

As usual, if you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments, please leave them for me!
