DO YOU HAVE A FANTASY OF RIDING A WHALE ?

Riding a whale! This is a fantasy that has made it into books and films. But, assuming you could do away with any oxygen and breath on your own, what would a trip on a whale's back really be like? Whales can stay under the water a long time - and mostly they are feeding.

ATLANTIC OCEAN ALSO HAS SEA OF PLASTIC

BAD NEWS - THERE IS ALSO A SEA OF PLASTIC IN THE ATLANTIC. Link to the story now from CBS news...

"Researchers are warning of a new blight on the ocean: a swirl of confetti-like plastic debris stretching over thousands of square miles in a remote expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The floating garbage - hard to spot from the surface and spun together by a vortex of currents - was documented by two groups of scientists who trawled the sea between scenic Bermuda and Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores islands."

MIGRATING MERMAIDS ARE WARM WATER DUGONGS

"Also known as sea cows, these herbivores enjoy lives as uneventful as their land-based bovine counterparts: Because they consume plants living in the intertidal zone, they have no need to dive to great depths in search of food so the waters they most inhabit are shallow and warm. And they are so large that they are not threatened by any other animals, except tiger sharks which only occasionally venture into shallow water..." Rachel Sullivan

Sailors may have seen sea cows and thought "mermaids," but only if they were hallucinating!

DOES THE SEA LIFE YOU TOUCH in A HANDS ON EXHIBIT DIE FROM TOO MUCH HUMAN CONTACT?

Ever pick up the same starfish a couple hundred other people did that day and wonder if it will live after so much human contact, being taken up out of the water and into the air?

Do aquariums and other exhibitions pick species that are hardy or out of danger of extinction, knowing that these specimins will die?

I wonder.... Siren

SEA MONSTERS ON OLD MAPS OF THE SEA

OLD MAPS of the sea often show sea monsters. Today I wonder if these monsters were placed in unknown waters or about fear. Where they simply whales? Were there other species out there in the ancient oceans that are now extinct?

BY THE SEA a poem by CHRISTINA ROSETTI ( 1830-1894)

BY THE SEA

by Christina Georgina Rossetti

Why does the sea moan evermore?

Shut out from heaven it makes its moan,
It frets against the boundary shore;
All earth's full rivers cannot fill The sea,
that drinking thirsteth still.
Sheer miracles of loveliness
Lie hid in its unlooked-on bed:
Anemones, salt, passionless,
Blow flower-like; just enough alive
To blow and multiply and thrive.
Shells quaint with curve, or spot, or spike,
Encrusted live things argus-eyed,
All fair alike,
yet all unlike,
Are born without a pang,
and die
Without a pang,
and so pass by.

KILLER SHRIMP KILLING OFF OTHER SHRIMP IN BRITISH WATERS!

"It tends to aggressively pursue its prey, often leaving it dead but uneaten. It is known to have caused the extinction of several other species in other areas," the EPOCH TIMES reported.

MASS EXTINCTION OF LIFE ON EARTH BEFORE - AND AGAIN?

FOSSIL EVIDENCE UNDER THE SEA !
Will it happen again in our lifetime?

"Some scientists have speculated that effects of humans - from hunting to CLIMATE CHANGE - are fueling another great mass extinction. A few go so far as to say we are entering a new geologic epoch, leaving the 10,000-year-old Holocene Epoch behind and entering the ANTHROPOCENE EPOCH, marked by major changes to global temperatures and ocean chemistry, increased sediment erosion, and changes in biology that range from altered flowering times to shifts in migration patterns of birds and mammals and potential die-offs of tiny organisms that support the entire marine food chain."

I LOOKED AND THE WATER WAS ALL GONE!

I went to the public park closest to me the other day, and was shocked to see the pool, which had been so full of water the day before, completely drained. Due to budget cuts, the pool was only open for 6 weeks and in the afternoons for the summer. Still, there was a heat wave of 100 degree or more temperatures last week and you would have thought that every kid in the area who didn't have an apartment pool would be using it.

Guess I'll have to keep going to the heated pool at my closest YMCA instead! Siren

GRUNION ARE THE ONLY FISH TO JUMP OUT OF THE WATER TO LAY EGGS ON THE BEACH

"Along southern California's sandy beaches, from March through September, one of the most remarkable life cycles in the sea is completed; the California grunion comes ashore to spawn. ... California grunion are small silvery fish found only along the coast of southern California and northern Baja California. Most sportsmen would be unaware of their existence were it not for the unique spawning behavior of these fish. Unlike other fish, grunion come out of the water completely to lay their eggs in the wet sand of the beach."

BP GULF OIL SPILL A KILLER - LINK TO DISCOVERY NEWS UPDATE

"McKinney said he believes that as a result, the oil spill may have increased the size of the so-called "dead zone" of oxygen-starved water off the coast of Louisiana and Texas. Much of the dead zone -- which is toxic to all marine life -- is caused by agricultural runoff from Midwest farms flowing out the Mississippi River."

NSIDC NATIONAL SNOW AND ICE DATA CENTER

It's way too hot! Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is SUMMER and there are some overwhelming heat waves happening right now... But in the SOUTHERN hemisphere, and the SOUTHERN ocean, the ANTARCTIC it is winter, dark, and colder than ever. Here is a very scientific site that looks at snow and ice and weather...

"Arctic SEA ICE reflects sunlight, keeping the polar regions cool and moderating global climate. According to scientific measurements, Arctic sea ice has declined dramatically over at least the past thirty years, with the most extreme decline seen in the summer melt season."

The thought keeps me cool! Siren

SHIPWRECK NEWS HMS INVESTIGATOR found in WESTER ARTIC after 150 YEARS

"Canadian archeologists have found a ship abandoned more than 150 years ago in the quest for the fabled Northwest Passage and which was lost in the search for the doomed expedition of Sir John Franklin, the head of the team said Wednesday.
Marc-Andre Bernier, Parks Canada's head of underwater archaeology, said the HMS INVESTIGATOR, abandoned in the ice in 1853, was found in shallow water in Mercy Bay along the northern coast of Banks Island in Canada's western Arctic.

"The ship is standing upright in very good condition. It's standing in about 11 meters (36 feet) of water," he said. "This is definitely of the utmost importance. This is the ship that sailed the last leg of the Northwest Passage."

AMY LOWELL POETRY SEA SHELL

Sea Shell
by Amy Lowell

Sea Shell, Sea Shell,
Sing me a song, O Please!
A song of ships, and sailor men,
And parrots, and tropical trees,
Of islands lost in the Spanish Main
Which no man ever may find again,
Of fishes and corals under the waves,
And seahorses stabled in great green caves.
Sea Shell, Sea Shell,
Sing of the things you know so well.

BAILEY MATTHEWS SHELL MUSEUM focuses on GULF COAST SHELLS and MOLLUSKS

Here's the link to a SEA SHELL and MOLLUSK MUSEUM in Florida that focuses on the sea creatures of the GULF OF MEXICO.

Now we would suggest that if you go to a beach to clean up and you find some washed up shells that you ASK someone - a teacher or the director of the clean up effort what you should do if you find sea shells. The scientists may want to study these rather than let you take them home.

REMEMBER THAT A GOOD SEA SHELL COLLECTOR ALWAYS identifies not only the shell, but the location it was found and the date.

JAPAN STILL HUNTS WHALES and the INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION FAILS

JAPAN STILL HUNTS, as does ICELAND and NORWAY... and this breaking news story from Yahoo news explains....

By ARTHUR MAX, Associated Press Writer

"The breakdown put diplomatic efforts on ice for at least a year, raised the possibility that South Korea might join the whaling nations and raised questions about the global drive to prevent the extinction of the most endangered whale species."

SEASHELLS ARE NOT AS COMMON AS THEY USED TO BE - MAYBE IT's TIME TO JUST SKETCH THEM!

SEASHELLS are disappearing off the shores and going to the beach even in the early morning will not guarantee that there are shells to be collected. That means that there are fewer shelled sea creatures living under our oceans.

One of the reasons for this is dredging or harvesting shells by scraping the bottom of the sea and hauling them aboard a ship.

Limit your collecting to what you personally find washed up on a beach. Or take a sketch book with you and draw what you see!

It's lovely to have a row of jars full of beach finds - sea glass and holed stones - scallops and muscles - the occasional univalve - lined up on a shelf. These can be full of memories of a wonderful day at the beach. But remember sea shells are part of the natural world that usually reclaims itself.

DO NOT PURCHASE SEA SHELLS FROM STORES !

AUDUBON INSTITUTE and Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program

Be a good mermaid and check out this site because it's about how we are trying to rescue the sea turtles that are dying - congested with oil.

"The Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program (LMMSTRP) is a volunteer organization based out of Audubon Aquarium of the America in New Orleans. Funded in part through the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Prescott Grant Program, this project rescues, cares for and relocates injured, ill or out-of-habitat marine mammals and sea turtles."

WHEREVER THERE ARE BEACHES some MARINE life is going to come ashore dying or dead. There are other organizations in which volunteers come to the aid of these creatures.

Did You Know THERE ARE NATURAL HOLES IN THE SEA BED THAT OIL FLOWS OUT OF?

OIL DOES EMERGE from natural holes in the sea bottom and that oil does pollute the water all the time. ON SOME BEACHES you find SEA TAR which is another oily substance. The amounts are usually minimal and not so destructive as the spill we are learning about now which is in the Gulf of Mexico.

GULF OF MEXICO OIL SPILL KILLING MARINE LIFE

Dolphins and other sea life killed by oil in the Gulf of Mexico, after a undersea well sprung a leak, are washing ashore... that's according to the reading on line that I've been doing these last few days. It makes me very sad, because it seems like there is no way to easily stop millions and millions of gallons of oil from spewing...

I often wonder if all that oil is not the earth's lubricant... if we use it all up will it stop softening the blow of earthquakes or is that why there have also been so many very big earthquakes this year?

STRANGE SCIENCE SEAMONSTERS

Contrary to popular belief, the sailors of Columbus's day did not think they would sail right off the edge of the earth. They were, however, apprehensive about what they would find in their travels.
