TOM GRUBER FIRST FOOTAGE OF HAWAIIAN DAY OCTOPUS WHO RECOGNIZED HERSELF ?! DO YOU AGREE?

I think Octopuses might be the most intelligent of sea creatures, other than the whales.  In this video, Tom  Gruber, the inventor of Siri, filmed one that saw itself in a mirror.  To be honest, I think the octopus saw another octopus.  DO YOU THINK IT KNEW IT WAS LOOKING AT ITSELF?

CARNIVOROUS DEATH BALL SPONGES! ZOBIE WORMS!?

Carnivorous!  OCEAN CENSUS ORG

Excerpt:

Its spherical form is covered in tiny hooks that trap prey, a clear contrast to the gentle, passive, filter-feeding undertaken by most sponges. ‘Zombie worms’ (Osedax sp.) were also observed. Although not thought to be new to science, these worms have no mouth or gut and rely on symbiotic bacteria to break down fats inside the bones of whales and other large vertebrates.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A WHALE DIES BEACHED? THIS IS KINDA GROSS! THEY CAN EXPLODE!

This is an older article from the Guardian in September 2022

GUARDIAN : ENVIRONMENT : WHALE STRANDINGS : WHAT HAPPENS TO DEAD WHALE BODIES?

Excerpt: Two mass strandings in Tasmanian waters in a week has left about 200 pilot whales and 14 sperm whales dead. ... In warmer climates, the internal decomposition of dead whales can result in spontaneous explosions. Gut bacteria in the whales can multiply quickly, producing large quantities of methane gas. “If the rest of the body is still intact – if the outer layer, the blubber, is still intact and not broken up – then it can lead to an explosion,” Meynecke said.

In 2004, the decomposing carcass of a 60-tonne, 17-metre sperm whale expoded on a busy streetin the Taiwanese city of Tainan, “showering cars and shops with blood and organs and stopping traffic for hours”. ...

THE BLACK ABALONE : CALIFORNIA STATE SEASHELL and ECOSYSTEMS : TAKE THE TIDEPOOL FIELD TRIP

Excerpt: Tidepools are technically pools of water left behind in the rocks when the water recedes during low tide. However, tidepools typically refer to the entire rocky area in the intertidal zone which are submerged during high tide and exposed during low tide. Tidepools are home to many species of animals, seaweeds, and plants. The organisms that live in this habitat are very resilient because of the stress they have to go through on a daily basis due to tidal change and the threat of desiccation (drying out), but humans can cause irreversible harm if we are not careful where we step and how we act in the area.

WHALES COMMUNICATED TO ESCAPE WHALERS : THE BIOLOGY OF MAKING THE SOUNDS and CODAS

Excerpt:
Soon after whaling ships began operating in the North Pacific, an interesting trend emerged. Within just a few years, whalers saw a 58% drop in their successful strikes. Sperm whales had suddenly become harder to kill— they had begun fleeing the boats instead of forming their usual defensive circles. Were whales communicating new strategies to each other?

FIRST TIME COLOSSAL SQUID SEEN BUT IT'S A TEENAGER!

DAILY MAIL SCIENCE COLOSSAL SQUID IN SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN

EXCERPT:

The stunning 4K video film, captured in the deep sea by California's Schmidt Ocean Institute, shows the rare creature's transparent body and eight pink tentacles.

Colossal squid can grow up to 23 feet (7 metres) and weigh as much as 500kg, making them the heaviest invertebrate on the planet.

But this specimen, which looks like a delicate glass sculpture, is just a 'teenager' – measuring 11 inches (30cm).

Dying colossal squid adults have previously been filmed by fishermen, but the species has never been seen alive at depth before.

Expedition chief scientist, Dr Michelle Taylor at the University of Essex, called the footage 'stunning' and 'beautiful'.

Siren here!  Check out the video on the website I linked to....  I wonder if the scientists will be able to find this particular creature again when it is more grown!

CANADIAN GULLY IS HOME TO NEWLY DISCOVERED FISH WITHOUT A DNA MATCH : ALMOST BLACK WITH BULBOUS HEAD

It’s called the Gully, and it’s a marine protected area under Fisheries and Oceans Canada. More than 9 miles wide, the Gully is “the largest underwater canyon in the western North Atlantic,” the department says, and is filled with endangered and rare species. It was here that in 2009 researchers caught and brought to the surface a mysterious looking fish. The animal had a bulbous head, sleek body and gaping mouth, and was a dark brown, nearly black color, according to a July 24 Facebook post from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “They sampled and analyzed its DNA,” the department said. “Back then, it did not match any known species and was left without a name.”
