GIANT TOXIC LION'S MANE JELLYFISH ON NEW ENGLAND BEACHES : DON'T TOUCH THEM EVEN IF THEY'RE DEAD!

UNILAD : OFFICIALS WARN OF GIANT JELLYFISH

Excerpt: Experts say the jellyfish’s tentacles contain large amounts of neurotoxins that can cause things like skin rashes to respiratory problems, welts, and, in rare cases, even death.

According to the Mayo Clinic,, if you come into contact with a lion’s mane jellyfish, they recommend removing any visible tentacles using fine tweezers.

Then, soak the area in hot water between 110 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as keep the area immersed under hot water until the pain subsides.

Afterward, apply hydrocortisone cream or ointment.

Experts say the surge in lion's mane jellyfish is being driven by warming ocean temperatures, wind and tidal currents, abundant food sources, and sheltered coastal waters that allow the creatures to thrive before washing ashore.

While this is a strange occurrence, marine experts say this influx of the species could indicate something is changing.

RARE SIGHTING OF GIANT PHANTOM JELLY FISH OFF THE COAST OF ARGENTINA

OOOH this BBC website has video of the swimming phantom!

BBC NEWS : RARE SIGNTING PHANTOM JELLY OFF ARGENTINA

Excerpt:

A rare phantom jellyfish has been spotted by scientists exploring the deep sea near Argentina.

Stygiomedusa gigantea, more commonly known as the giant phantom jellyfish, was filmed 250 metres below the surface in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute documented the creature, which can grow up to 1m (3.3ft) in diameter, with their arms reaching up to 10m (33ft) long.

Their four arms, which look like long pink ribbons, are not stinging tentacles. Instead the jellyfish use them to catch their prey of fish and plankton, according to the institute.

The team also discovered 28 potential new species including corals, sea urchins, and sea anemones.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM - UNITED KINGDOM : ON SO MANY JELLYFISH : THEY ARE OLDER THAN THE DINOSAURS

NHM - UK : JELLY FISH

I think jelly fish are so beautiful and - usually - graceful. This web site has some excellent photographs, illustrating the diversity of jelly fish beauty!

Excerpt: Jellyfish come in incredible shapes, colours and sizes. Most jellyfishes’ bell-shaped bodies are between two centimetres and 40 centimetres across. However, some species can grow to more than two metres in diameter, with thin trailing tentacles that are even longer than that.

Jellyfish have radial symmetry, meaning that if you sliced a jellyfish down the middle, the parts would be symmetrical, like the segments of an orange.

These cnidarians are famous for their stinging abilities. The intensity of the sting varies by species.

Some jellyfish can also generate their own light, called bioluminescence – further adding to their otherworldly beauty.

BLUE BLOBS ON THE BEACH ARE STING-Y COLONIES OF INDIVIDUALS

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY   These blueish blogs that appear to have a sail aspect of their bodies are usually not able to live much longer once beached.  They sting.

Excerpt:

These are marine hydrozoans, a group of animals closely related to jellyfishes. Interestingly, what might look like a single animal is actually a colony of multiple individuals working together. This is similar to the Portuguese man o' war, which is also a colonial hydrozoan. By-the-wind sailors feed on planktonic organisms using tentacles that have harpoon-firing cells called cnidocysts, just like jellyfish.

POSITIVELY PURPLE RARE JELLY FISH on AUSTRALIAN BEACH

DAILY MAIL : INCREDIBLY RARE JELLY FISH WASHES UP ON SHORE - BYRON BAY  really good pictures.

It's eaten as a delicacy in Japan...

EXCERPT:  They are typically found in the Indian and Pacific oceans, the Red Sea, the East Atlantic and the Atlantic waters off West Africa, according to the Atlas of Living Australia.

'Animals that live in open waters are not observed that often unless they are washed on the beach because of strong winds or ocean current,' Mr Uribe-Palomino said.

The scientist ecouraged anyone who finds such a creature to contact the ATLAS OF LIVING AUSTRALIA with their photographs and information about their find.

'Encouraging people to submit information might help researchers to track species distribution and also to find the frequency of observation and seasonality of those animals.' he told Daily Mail Australia.

TOO MANY JELLY FISH?

I've been reading that there is a JELLY FISH AROUND THE WORLD AND THAT IT'S GLOBAL!  While scientists seem to be not worried, I can't help but wonder how or if this ties in with all the changes in the earth's temperature that is melting ice packs and changing the weather.  Be the changes part of a natural cycle, the earth responding to human use of resources, or something more mysterious, I hope to learn more soon!
