OCTOPUS AT AKRON ZOO PICKS HER OWN NAME : CORA

"A list of 2,200 suggestions submitted in a public naming contest was narrowed to three options today for the 20-pound, 4-foot-long octopus, and it chose Cora. It’s a shortened version of coral, which is a popular octopus habitat and the theme of the exhibit."

MYSTERY DISK IN THE BALTIC SEA : OCEAN EXPLORERS

So many articles about this in the media... a MYSTERY DISK that demands scientific exploration.

THE TREASURE HUNTERS, OCEAN X TEAM, DISCOVERED SOMETHING UNIQUE WHEN THEY DOVE DOWN TO THE MYSTERIOUS CIRCLE-SHAPED OBJECT IN THE BALTIC SEA
Treasure hunters confirm they have found something abnormal in the seabed
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 15, 2012
The Ocean X Team dove down to the circle-shaped object in the Baltic Sea and met something they never experienced before. First they thought it was just stone or a rock cliff, but after further observations the object appeared more as a huge mushroom, rising 3-4 meters/10-13 feet from the seabed, with rounded sides and rugged edges. The object had an egg shaped hole leading into it from the top, as an opening. On top of the object they also found strange stone circle formations, almost looking like small fireplaces. The stones were covered in something resembling soot.

“During my 20-year diving career, including 6000 dives, I have never seen anything like this. Normally stones don’t burn. I can’t explain what we saw, and I went down there to answer questions, but I came up with even more questions “, says Stefan Hogeborn, one of the divers at Ocean X Team.
The path to the object itself can be described as a runway or a downhill path that is flattened at the seabed with the object at the end of it.

“First we thought this was only stone, but this is something else. And since no volcanic activity has ever been reported in the Baltic Sea the find becomes even stranger. As laymen we can only speculate how this is made by nature, but this is the strangest thing I have ever experienced as a professional diver“, continues Peter Lindberg, one of the founder Ocean X Team.

SEA CREATURES FROM JAPANESE TSUNAMI REACHES U.S.

JEFF BARNARD of AP Press reports on the dock that arrived on the west coast of the U.S. bringing sea creatures that could invade the ecology here.

"Along for the ride were hundreds of millions of individual organisms, including a tiny species of crab, a species of algae, and a little starfish all native to Japan that have scientists concerned if they get a chance to spread out on the West Coast.

"This is a very clear threat," said John Chapman, a research scientist at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore., where the dock washed up early Tuesday. "... It's incredibly difficult to predict what will happen next."

A dozen volunteers scraped the dock clean of marine organisms and sterilized it with torches Thursday to prevent the spread of invasive species, said Chris Havel, spokesman for the state Department of Parks and Recreation, which is overseeing the dock's fate."

Here's the link to the official site where you can list your events that celebrate the ocean...

MINING THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH : PLASTIC IS IN ALL THE OCEANS :

"Today on World Oceans Day we celebrate and honor oceans by recognizing the underwater footprint we all unknowingly leave behind.

When it comes to plastic, what you throw away doesn't really go away. This was evident on my journey to one of the most remote ends of the earth - the Midway Atoll. This small piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near the northwestern end of the Hawaiian archipelago was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, and should have been the most pristine. There are no cars, streets, lights or air pollution, yet I couldn't escape the remnants of modern society littered everywhere in the form of plastic."
