Kelly Slater surfs in the second heat at the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surf contest on the North Shore at Waimea Bay, Hawaii Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009. Slater scored a 98 out of 100 points on the wave. Here's the slide show!

ARE GIANT SQUID CANNIBALS ?
This is a New Scientist story a few years old, but I've been reading up on Giant Squid. These are maybe 50 feet! There are also Giant Octopus. Now these live at great depths and so it is rare that one be captured. Sadly the Japanese captured a Giant Squid a few years ago and it died of it's injuries from being captured. STUDY IN THEIR OWN ECOZONE!

"ISOLATED" a new BIG WAVE SURFING DOCUMENTARY is coming soon!
A FERAL is a surfer who doesn't care for the contests and prizes as much as the thrill of adventure and challenging themselves to get the biggest waves yet. Now actor Ryan Phillippe is the executive producer of the documentary ISOLATED, which promises to be as much about the culture of surfing and the culture of the countries that the surfers travel to in order to surf; the poison fish, the local fisherman, getting lost in the jungle... can hardly wait!

ARTIC RUSSIAN SHIP HELD FOR RANSOM - MODERN PIRACY!

"Crew members had reported the ship was attacked on July 24 in the Baltic Sea off the Swedish island of Oland. They said a dozen masked men boarded the ship, tied them up, beat them, questioned them about drug trafficking and searched the freighter before leaving."

According to the August 6th, 2009 Rolling Stone Magazine, Brazilian female big wave surfer MAYA GABEIRA has suffered as many broken noses (6) as she has surfboards, but she continues to chase after the big waves with a Jet Ski and to be... almost... fearless. Says Carlos Burle "She would be dead by now if she was (fearless). She just knows how to deal with the stress and the adrenaline that she has to face daily. It definitely is not a friendly environment for a girl."

The phenomenon, Raz said, stems from a dire water shortage, compounded in recent years by tourism and chemical industries as well as a growing population. "This is the most remarkable evidence of the brutal interference of humans in the Dead Sea," he said.
The parched moonscape, famous as the site of biblical Sodom and Gomorra, is the lowest point on earth and runs more than 60 miles through Israel and the West Bank."

POOL SEASON IS HERE !
When I was growing up, having a swimming pool set up in your backyard for the summer was a very big deal! (We went to public pools too!)
Getting used to the cold water was always an art. Showering or running through the lawn sprinkler first seemed to keep the shock of jumping in to a minimum. I t seemed that every inch of submersion of one's torso was an ordeal!

"Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), which are the largest of the toothed whales, echolocate to pinpoint their prey. Basically, they wmit clicking sounds that bounce off potential meals, including large squid and other fish. BLUE CRUSH : FILM ABOUT WOMEN IN SURFING
Watched "Blue Crush" the movie about "girls" who surf in Hawaii, and the big event - surfing the pipeline! First saw this film on the Big Screen and was so impressed with the filming. Now a friend who watched it with me thought it was a "terrible" surfing movie and says he's seen many of them. But he's a man, and 71 years old, so-
"Blue Crush" is NOT GIDGET! I think it's difficult to spin a good story into a movie that has so much action in it. However, the story about the surfer "girl" who is left to raise her little sister because her mom has followed her Meal Ticket to Vegas, and her involvement with a well paid NFL football player on vacation which takes her mind away from training to compete, has a lot of FEMINIST THEMES. First of all, maybe things are changing but women in ACTIVE ROLES - on boards - and not just passive admirers is rare in surfing magazines photos (females tend to be bikini-clad pretties clamoring around males), films, and movies. Secondly, how many movies involve a woman getting respect - from a profession, from her friendly peers, from the local surfer "boys," as well as her boyfriend and her little sister?! There was plenty of conflict and resolution here...

The Starbucks logo with the "mermaid" with two legs is actually a mesaline. Check out "A Dictionary of Symbols" by J.E. Cirlot. Sirens come in two types... the half-bird and half woman type, and the half fish and half woman type, called a mermaid. The ancient Greeks though both types were busy seducing mariners with promises of sex. Of course, cuter stories via Disney movies, and cartoons, have given mermaids other reputations.
