BLUE CRUSH : FILM ABOUT WOMEN IN SURFING

Watched "Blue Crush" the movie about "girls" who surf in Hawaii, and the big event - surfing the pipeline! First saw this film on the Big Screen and was so impressed with the filming. Now a friend who watched it with me thought it was a "terrible" surfing movie and says he's seen many of them. But he's a man, and 71 years old, so- "Blue Crush" is NOT GIDGET! I think it's difficult to spin a good story into a movie that has so much action in it. However, the story about the surfer "girl" who is left to raise her little sister because her mom has followed her Meal Ticket to Vegas, and her involvement with a well paid NFL football player on vacation which takes her mind away from training to compete, has a lot of FEMINIST THEMES. First of all, maybe things are changing but women in ACTIVE ROLES - on boards - and not just passive admirers is rare in surfing magazines photos (females tend to be bikini-clad pretties clamoring around males), films, and movies. Secondly, how many movies involve a woman getting respect - from a profession, from her friendly peers, from the local surfer "boys," as well as her boyfriend and her little sister?! There was plenty of conflict and resolution here...
