SUPER SQUISHY WATER BALLOONS OR JELLY FISH? WHAT WASHED UP IN HUNGTINGTON BEACH?

NATURE WORLD NEWS - STRANGE JELLY CREATURES   by Monica Antonio

EXCERPT ... Ryan Rustan, a local resident, posted a picture of the strange creatures that he described as "little water balloons popping under his feet." Rustan noted that there were approximately thousands of these little creatures on the Huntington Beach shore...  Weird as they may look, Matt Bracken, UC Irvine associate professor at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, offered some answers in unveiling what these strange creatures really are. Bracken said these creatures could be "pelagic tunicates" or more commonly known as snaps.

SEA OF PLASTIC IN THE PACIFIC BIGGER THAN EVER!

THE GUARDIAN - GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH BIGGER THAN EVER

EXCERPT:
A reconnaissance flight taken in a modified C-130 Hercules aircraft found a vast clump of mainly plastic waste at the northern edge of what is known as the “great Pacific garbage patch," located between Hawaii and California.

The density of rubbish was several times higher than the Ocean Cleanup, a foundation part-funded by the Dutch government to rid the oceans of plastics, expected to find even at the heart of the patch, where most of the waste is concentrated.

EAST PACIFIC CORAL AND WEST PACIFIC CORAL - EVIDENCE OF ISOLATION!

DAILY MAIL - CORAL REEF ISOLATED FROM REST OF OCEAN

CORAL SPREAD - BUT CAN'T MAKE IT ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE PACIFIC.

EXCERPT:
But researchers have now used simulations of the ocean currents over a 14 year period to calculate how coral larvae in Pacific Ocean can spread.
They found coral larvae from the central Pacific could not survive long enough to make the 3,100 mile journey to the east.
Even during the record-breaking El Nino of 1998, which radically altered the speed and direction of ocean currents, the journey would have taken too long for the larvae.

BLUE GREE ALGAE - CYANOBACTERIA - BLOOM EFFECTING SEA LIFE and FLORIDA ECONOMY

FLORIDA ECONOMY and SEA LIFE effected by BLUE GREEN ALGAE BLOOM - DAILY SABAH
Excerpt:

The turquoise canals, streams and lakes that zigzag among Stuart's islands make this small town a nirvana for beachcombers and water sport lovers.

But the thick layer of slimy blue-green algae - also called cyanobacteria - coating the water and smelling of sewage has dampened the town's appeal.

The putrid algal blooms, which appear mornings and evenings with the rising tide, are toxic and can cause rashes and respiratory problems.

"The economic consequences are grave and ongoing," said Sarah Heard, the commissioner of Martin County, the district that includes Stuart. This past weekend several beaches in the county closed during July 4th celebrations. Algae also kills sponges, oysters and other sea creatures integral to water filtration. "There comes a time when the water can no longer sustain life," Briceno said.

SHOULD YOU REALLY WEAR FLIP FLOPS ALL SUMMER LONG?

Probably not!

Flip Flops let your feet air, protect the bottoms of your feet from hot cement, and are usually very inexpensive so you can just buy another pair when they're worn out.

But podiatrists are saying that they are trash for our feet, providing no support for our arches.

If you are not overweight, and if you also exercise your feet, such as when you swim, but also pointing your toes, spreading your toes, and giving your ankles a whirl around, you may help the muscles in your feet that are so precious and work so hard to support you so that they are not harmed by shoes, but you'll still need more protection than flip flops can give you.

So wear them pool side or to walk the dog around the block, but not as your summer foot gear.

AMAZON RIVER - 600 MILE LONG CORAL REEF - 60 SPECIES OF SPONGES and MORE!

DAILY MAIL - MASSIVE CORAL REEF AT THE AMAZON!  link to full article!

EXCERPT:
Researchers say the find was not suspected because many of the world's great rivers produce major gaps in reef systems, where no corals grow.
The Amazon plume, an area where freshwater from the river mixes with the salty Atlantic Ocean, affects a broad area of the tropical North Atlantic Ocean in terms of salinity, pH, light penetration and sedimentation, conditions that usually correlate to a major gap in Western Atlantic reefs.
The researchers say the reef appears to be thriving below the freshwater 'plume', or outflow, of the Amazon.
Compared to many other reefs, the scientists say in a paper in Science Advances on Friday, it is is relatively 'impoverished'.
Despite this, they found over 60 species of sponges, 73 species of fish, spiny lobsters, stars and much other reef life.

PRETENDING TO BE A DEEP SEA DIVER IN THE SWIMMING POOL

When I was a girl we sometimes went to a huge public swimming pool that had a big shallow section - maybe only a couple feet deep.  They provided a locker key on a band that went around your wrist or could be tied to your swim suit strap.  I preferred to have mine around my wrist because I liked to pretend that it was a watch (or some other gizmo) that I had to pay attention to so that I wouldn't run out of air as I swam down- deep sea diving.

Never mind that all it took to get air was to stand up.

The best thing about it was the imagination it took.

Never mind that mostly what I saw down in the bottom of the pool was other people swimming around, or the sometimes gooey turquoise paint.

In my mind I was looking for sunken treasure, and I don't mean some coins that fell out of a parent's pockets or a pair of lost sun glasses!

IT'S TIME TO DONATE YOUR OLD SWIM SUITS TO A POOL THAT PROVIDES SUITS TO LOW INCOME MERMAIDS

Last year I made use of a large public swimming pool throughout the summer.  I love this pool because it's not crowded and it doesn't do lanes, so I can freestyle all over the pool without much worry that I'll clash in a lane or accidently hit someone else while I do my thing.

Mid-season I was there when a number of children who had the money to get in but did not have proper swimming suits got turned away.  Considering how underutilized this pool is, I asked what the problem was.   I mean WHAT A SHAME that they wanted to exercise and cool off in the water on a terribly hot day. These kids wanted to swim in shorts, or maybe shorts, bra, and a T- Shirt.  These kids might actually show up showered and in clean clothes, but an official swimsuit this is not.  Frankly, much of the underwear that is sold for women these days is almost as good if not better than what is sold for swim wear.

I've bought suits at thrift stores that appeared new myself.  One season when I was swimming indoors a few times a week I experienced how fast the chlorine in the water could destroy the fabric and elastic quickly, even if I rinsed it out there and soaked it in soapy water as soon as I got home.

I brought some information on some thrift shops that seem to have swim suits for sale that appear previously unused, such as having the sanitary panel intact, to the pool.  The management there thanked me for that and said she would pass it on  I also located a nearby charity that gave clothes away for free to people once a week and brought some fliers.

Yes swim suits are INTIMATE clothing...

But if you bought a suit that you cannot wear because it no longer fits that is in very good condition, consider donating it.

SHIPWRECKS - HURRICANES - AND TREE RINGS : WHAT WE CAN LEARN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

WASHINGTON POST - ANCIENT SHIPWRECKS - CLIMATE CHANGE

EXCERPT:

To study shipwrecks, the new research drew upon historical records of no less than 657 wrecks of Spanish ships in the Caribbean between 1495 and 1825 — a period that started just after Columbus’s first expedition to the new world. All of the storms that were inferred to have wrecked these ships occurred prior to the earliest year in today’s official Atlantic hurricane database, which is kept by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and begins in 1851.... But to strengthen the analysis, the researchers also cross-referenced the shipwreck history with data from the rings of pine trees growing in the Florida Keys, which can also provide a record of hurricane history.

GHOST LIKE OCTOPUS DOWN 5000 FEET - NEW SPECIES - NECKER ISLAND - RIDGE AREA OFF HAWAII

HONOLULU SUN TIMES - NEW GHOST-LIKE OCTOPUS SPECIES OFF HAWAII

EXCERPT:

According to NOAA’s Michael Vecchione, the ROV was traversing a flat area of rock interspersed with sediments at 4,290 meters when it came across an octopod sitting on a flat rock dusted with a light coat of sediment.

The animal didn’t appear to be very muscular and lacked pigment cell, causing it to appear “ghost-like,” according to Vecchione, who also noted that the octopod was “unlike any published records and was the deepest observation ever for this type of cephalopod.”

The octopod is believed to be a member of the incirte octopods. These octopods lack fins and cirri. They are also similar in appearance to shallow water Octopus.

Cirrate octopods have been reported in depths of over 5,000 meters. However, the deepest published reports for incirrates are all less than 4,000 meters. ...

"GALLON OF MILK" RARE ALBINO WHALE SPOTTED

CS MONITOR - HUGE ALBINO WHALE SPOTTED OFF MEXICO

EXCERPT: This specimen was observed for the first time during the 2008-2009 season as a whale calf with the albino characteristics for which it was named,” Conap (Commission of Natural Protected Areas) explains in a recent online post....

In the recent sighting, this time in the area known as Alambre Island in the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, Gallon of Milk was accompanied by a calf that was completely gray, which must mean she has become a mother for the first time." ...

The bright white whale’s condition albinism makes her of a special kind, since the gene mutation that leads to a sharp decrease in the pigment melanin – or the lack of it – is barely recorded among marine mammals,” Tech Times explains.

KINGDOM OF THE SEAHORSE - Recommended FILM by SIRENS LINK TO SEA

TOUR THEIR MAGICAL AND COMPLEX WORLD - a PBS FILM - Wonderful!

Here are some things to learn from this film

Seahorses have no teeth or stomach.
They live in coastal - shore areas all around the world - most every sea.

They are upright fish who use their tails to hold onto swaying sea grasses.

The male gives birth from a pouch, but he also fertilizes the eggs of the female.

They spend seven months breeding, and stick with the same partner.

Through that season they are faithful and so they do recognize each other as individuals.

See the film and learn about a unique scientific intervention that saved fishing and the seahorses.

ARE HAWAII's WHALES "MISSING" OR JUST FEEDING ELSEWHERE

WHALE WATCHING TOURISM is big in Hawaii, but what about the Hump Backed Whales.  Various articles suggest that they have died, or are feeding elsewhere because of the changes in water temperatures of the ocean due to Global Warming.

INQUISITOR - MISSING WHALES - ALASKA DEATHS RELATED?

EXCERPT:

Hawaii’s humpback whales are missing in large numbers based upon early 2016 reports. Normally, beginning in early November, around 10,000 humpback whales travel from Alaska to Hawaii in order spend the winter in the warmer waters off the Hawaian islands. But, so far, officials at the Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary say they have not been seeing the usual number of humpback whale sightings, making it a mystery to be solved. While it’s possible the El Nino weather patterns are a factor, earlier in the fall of 2015 other researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA) noticed an alarming number of whale deaths near Alaska.

WAS BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE A GENTLEMAN? HISTORY MAY HAVE BEEN REWRITTEN!

DAILY MAIL - UK - BLACKBEARD GENEROUS WITH HIS SIBLINGS  article by Richard Gray

EXCERPT:

Historian Baylus Brooks, who conducted the research with the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, also questions the validity of many of the exploits credited to the legendary pirate.

He argues many of the deeds attributed to Blackbeard, who became known by some as the King of Pirates, were misconceptions, or worse, made up entirely. ...
'The enormously successful pirate Edward Thache was not the notorious and villainous "Pirate King" Blackbeard - or Satan "from hell" as Mist wrote him to be,' explained Mr Brooke.
'He was an educated aristocrat, likely grandson of an Anglican minister trained at Oxford.

'His family in Spanish Town, Jamaica, owned an estate with slaves; they probably rode in their personal carriage to church and conversed with assemblymen and their families in the palace square.
'And he was a veteran...
