EXCERPT: The critically endangered blue whale, the largest animal ever to have lived, is making a comeback, marine scientists say.

A total of 55 blue whales were sighted or recorded in the past year, according to the British Antarctic Survey, which has been studying whale movement in waters surrounding South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.   ...  It reaches a maximum length of 98 feet - the same length as two and a half London buses. ... Almost none of the genera that have species averaging 0.4 inches long are threatened with extinction, But 23 percent of those that are 3.9 inches are threatened, 40 percent of those that are 39 inches are endangered and 86 percent of those that are 32.8 feet are vulnerable, Payne said.
These are species that are not extinct yet, but are on the respected Red List of threatened and endangered species created by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
