LAKE SUPERIOR IS THE RESTING PLACE OF OVER 350 SHIPS

MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY - LAKE SUPERIOR SHIP WRECKS

Excerpt: Of the estimated 10,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes region, only about 350 of them are located in Lake Superior. Of those, about 50 wrecks are presumed to be within Minnesota waters. Most of Minnesota's shipwreck history can be found in Lake Superior. Many wrecks have been located, but at least half lay undiscovered.

In an effort to aid in the safe navigation of the often-treacherous waters, the U.S. Lighthouse Service erected lighthouses in key locations throughout the Great Lakes region. Split Rock Lighthouse was built in response to the great winter gale of November 1905 that claimed 36 lives and disabled or destroyed 29 ships.

Siren here!  The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975 - recent history - may be the most famous.  Read this site and learn about some of the ships that sank during the Industrial Revolution.  Many sunken ships have never been located!

A LAKE IS FRESHWATER BUT A SEA IS SALTWATER?

Do the names of various bodies of water tell us if the water is salty or not?

The Great Lakes are freshwater.  (And hold about 20% of the water on earth.)

The Great Lakes are named Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario,

The Great Salt Lake in Utah is salty, though called a lake.

The largest salt water lake in the world is named The Caspian Sea.

Do a little research and learn how a body of water becomes "salty."

DID YOU KNOW THAT OCEAN DOLPHINS DO NOT LIKE FRESH WATER?

Dolphins will enter rivers that feed into the salty ocean but usually turn back where the fresh water and salt water meet, so they are not in LAKES, not even the GREAT LAKES...

OCEAN DOLPHIN SKIN NEEDS THE SALT WATER TO STAY HEALTHY...

but, it might have something to do also with the kinds of fish they like to eat.

Reports that dolphins were returning to Lake Erie were false,

SEA FLOOR MAPPING BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT SCIENCE CENTER and WOODSHOLE COASTAL AND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER

USGS GOV - SCIENCE CENTER SEA FLOOR

MARINE GEOLOGY!  How do scientist's discover what the sea floor looks like?

EXCERPT:  SFNG uses acoustic and optical techniques to acquire detailed geologic information about the sea floor, such as seabed topography, sediment composition and distribution, and underlying geologic structure.  This information defines the geologic framework and provides a base for a wide-range of USGS research.

Check them out!
