Excerpt: The tiny silvery-blue pupfish rely on a shallow shelf at the cave's mouth for their food and spawning, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

But the generally calm and sheltered home for the tiny fish has been prone to water surges caused by earthquakes that displace the algae and invertebrates that pupfish eat, KVVU reported.

Kevin Wilson, Death Valley National Park's Supervisory Biologist and Devil's Hole Program Manager, told the outlet that the back-to-back disruptions to the ecosystem have depleted the Devil's Hole pupfish population by 90 percent.

Through 24/7 monitoring, national park officials are striving to protect and restore the suffering population.

CRAFTING SEA CREATURES ...

I'm going to post some YouTube videos that feature sewing and crochet to create sea creatures by sewing, crocheting, or embroidering.  

I think these could be fun to learn to make and would also make good presents...  

However, I ask you, when making stuffed animals to use cotton or other NATURAL products for the stuffing - such as cotton or bamboo , as much as possible and to also RECYCLE FABRICS, BUTTONS, and so on from OLD CLOTHING or whatever you already have around in order to make these as ECOLOGY SENSITIVE AS POSSIBLE!

When it comes to PLASTICS in art projects, use what you have but because plastic is a pollution problem and a health problem for all creatures (including us) to find or make some sort of substitute.

UP-CYCLING SHIPPING ENVELOPES - BE ECOLOGY SENSITIVE AND REUSE THE PLASTIC BUBBLE WRAP TYPE ENVELOPE

My ecology-sensitive friends are often trying to reuse items - such as packaging and bottles at least one more time to avoid throwing things into the trash after use and - let's face it - to economize.

I want to share what I do with envelopes that come to the house via shippers such as Amazon Prime. These envelopes are often made of plastic and have a version of bubble wrap inside them. I try to buy things local and don't often order on line but my friends do.

Here are some ideas.

Use the envelopes to organize other things such as paper, envelopes, cut outs, fabric samples and so on.  You can cut them and place them in another box with the open side up.

Use the envelopes to line and add padding to boxes that need a little insulation, such as Christmas ornaments.

Cut them into strips to pad boxes you are sending. You can cut them open to lay down a bottom layer and add a top layer before you put on the lid.

Are you transporting a hot meal?  Slip it into one of the envelopes to keep it warm longer.

Cut the envelope open and put it down in your car floor as a matt to protect your carpet from dirty shoes.  (I'm not sure about the driver's seat as they are light and can shift around but the passenger seats for sure.

Art projects : You can cut these envelopes up and paint or otherwise decorate them.

Researchers say the find was not suspected because many of the world's great rivers produce major gaps in reef systems, where no corals grow. 

The Amazon plume, an area where freshwater from the river mixes with the salty Atlantic Ocean, affects a broad area of the tropical North Atlantic Ocean in terms of salinity, pH, light penetration and sedimentation, conditions that usually correlate to a major gap in Western Atlantic reefs. 

The researchers say the reef appears to be thriving below the freshwater 'plume', or outflow, of the Amazon. 

Compared to many other reefs, the scientists say in a paper in Science Advances on Friday, it is is relatively 'impoverished'.

Despite this, they found over 60 species of sponges, 73 species of fish, spiny lobsters, stars and much other reef life.

Can you use bath water or dish sink water to water your plants?  Yes, with provisions!

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE WATER!

A you probably know already, there is drought and as a result in many places there is water rationing.

You can help save water by not wasting it.  Here is a list of things you can do that will help us save water so that there's enough for everyone for drinking and bathing, and so our farmers can water their crops.  You can probably think of other ways.

1) When you take a shower, after you're all wet and your hair is all wet, shut the water off while you soap up. Turn it back on to rinse.  YOU WILL SAVE GALLONS.

2) Don't use the water to heat a bathroom when it's too chilly to shower or bath.  Use a small portable heater to raise the air temperature first, shut it off, and then start with hotter water, and as the air temperature in the room rises, lower the water temperature.

3) Your dog and cat need to drink fresh water so you change the water in the bowl a couple times a day.  Don't throw that water down the sink.  Take it and water the vegetation that is on the "parkway" between the side walk and the street.  INSECTS NEED WATER and when they can't find it where they live they will come inside looking for it.  Then we kill them.

4) Consider changing part of your lawn from grass to a succulent or arid garden.  Put down stone for walkways around plantings. 

5) Be sure that your lawn and garden sprinklers are working and adjusted to not waste water that goes down the street to the sewer.

6) Toilets with low water flush are a puzzle.  Some of them have to be flushed twice to do the job.  However, you may have a toilet that would work just fine with less water.  Try filling a gallon water bottle, put the lid on it, set it down in the tank, and see what happens.  Displacing one gallon of water each time you flush will also save gallons.

7) Hand wash and hang to dry some of your clothing rather than put it through the machine. Hand washing is not only more gentle to fabrics but it also sometimes does a better job than the machine.  Over time you will save money and water.

JUNE GLOOM AND SMOG

A massive tornado hits the ground running and cuts a 16 miles path of destruction, followed by other smaller tornados that are just as mean.  The Daunube River of Europe is flooding, effecting 10 countries today.

And here in Southern California there is "June Gloom"  (a sort of foggy smoggyness that lingers mornings obscuring the sun, that "burns through") miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.  Boring compared to all that.

I feel lucky to live in Earthquake land at this point.

Of course, there are Earthquakes under the ocean waters too, which is what creates Tsunamis.

Every time there's a big enough Earthquake here,  thousands of people make promises to themselves that they don't keep like moving away or wearing their clothes to bed, or buying all plastic dishware.

OPERATION SPLASH IF YOU LOVE THE SEA!

STOP POLLUTING LITTERING and SAVE HARBORS (SPLASH) is a volunteer non-profit organization started in 1990 that works on the issue of waterfront pollution. At least once a day splash volunteers go out in a boat and collect trash on the sea.

OPERATION SPLASH VOLUNTEERS HAVE RESCUED MORE THAN 325 TONS OF GARBAGE FROM OUR SHORES: plastic bags, bottles, caps, juice boxes, Styrofoam, food containers, (things we expect to be floating out there) but also things like hit water heaters and flat screen TVs. engine blocks and more!

DOES THE SEA LIFE YOU TOUCH in A HANDS ON EXHIBIT DIE FROM TOO MUCH HUMAN CONTACT?

Did You Know THERE ARE NATURAL HOLES IN THE SEA BED THAT OIL FLOWS OUT OF?

OIL DOES EMERGE from natural holes in the sea bottom and that oil does pollute the water all the time. ON SOME BEACHES you find SEA TAR which is another oily substance. The amounts are usually minimal and not so destructive as the spill we are learning about now which is in the Gulf of Mexico.
