SUNKEN CITIES PROVE THAT PAST EARTH CHANGES INCLUDED A RISE IN SEA WATER LEVELS

Although I haven't covered this subject here at SIREN'S LINK TO SEA, it's part of our exploration of earth changes - climate and the oceans, the possible rise of sea levels.

DAILY MAIL SCIENCE : SCIENTISTS STUDY 7000 YEAR OLD CITY Excellent photos too!

Excerpts:  The city, known as Soline, was built on an artificial landmass by the ancient Hvar culture - but began to slowly sink off the coast of what is now Croatia as sea levels rose with the melting glaciers of the last Ice Age, starting around 12,000 BC.

...

Past explorations of its waters have dredged up Roman artifacts, a 2,200 year old shipwreck and another Hvar settlement in nearby Gradina Bay, 15feet below sea level and 'almost identical to the Soline settlement," according to the University of Zadar.

...

Their future work over the next few years will map both the Adriatic and North Sea, as they were between 10,000 and 24,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when sea levels were around 300 feet lower than they are today.

COMING UP - SOME ARTICLES THAT INVOLVE THE LATEST AMAZING SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY

These days it's easy to bring up articles of interest on your cell phone or news feed. However, the articles I'm posting to are the ones I found the most interesting our of many.  For the next couple weeks at least I'll be posting articles about sea life and the ocean that involve the latest amazing science technology.

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE WATER!

A you probably know already, there is drought and as a result in many places there is water rationing.

You can help save water by not wasting it.  Here is a list of things you can do that will help us save water so that there's enough for everyone for drinking and bathing, and so our farmers can water their crops.  You can probably think of other ways.

1) When you take a shower, after you're all wet and your hair is all wet, shut the water off while you soap up. Turn it back on to rinse.  YOU WILL SAVE GALLONS.

2) Don't use the water to heat a bathroom when it's too chilly to shower or bath.  Use a small portable heater to raise the air temperature first, shut it off, and then start with hotter water, and as the air temperature in the room rises, lower the water temperature.

3) Your dog and cat need to drink fresh water so you change the water in the bowl a couple times a day.  Don't throw that water down the sink.  Take it and water the vegetation that is on the "parkway" between the side walk and the street.  INSECTS NEED WATER and when they can't find it where they live they will come inside looking for it.  Then we kill them.

4) Consider changing part of your lawn from grass to a succulent or arid garden.  Put down stone for walkways around plantings.

5) Be sure that your lawn and garden sprinklers are working and adjusted to not waste water that goes down the street to the sewer.

6) Toilets with low water flush are a puzzle.  Some of them have to be flushed twice to do the job.  However, you may have a toilet that would work just fine with less water.  Try filling a gallon water bottle, put the lid on it, set it down in the tank, and see what happens.  Displacing one gallon of water each time you flush will also save gallons.

7) Hand wash and hang to dry some of your clothing rather than put it through the machine. Hand washing is not only more gentle to fabrics but it also sometimes does a better job than the machine.  Over time you will save money and water.

SUPERSTORM SANDY HEADING TO THE EAST COAST

Thousands of articles are on the net, hundreds of radio stations and television stations are following SUPERSTORM SANDY, which may be a historic event.  Listening to the radio this morning I heard that the streets of New York City are near deserted.  Most people are taking the storm seriously.  Electrical power may be distrupted, as is transportation services.  If you know of someone who is living alone, a senior citizen perhaps, or someone who is stranded and can't get to their pets, please contact that person before the storm hits.

WOMEN CAN BE PIRATES TOO

So much has been made of mermaids as females... but not so much about women as pirates though there were women pirates and are some today...

I'm celebrating pirates these next few weeks as many of us indulge in our fantasies for the upcoming Halloween season.

VACATIONING AT THE BEACH AND WONDERING ABOUT THE RISE IN SEA LEVELS

So many people, especially those who live inland and indoors most of the year, go to the sea - the ocean - on vacation.

One of the most interesting news these days is the subject of "Global Warming."

Some people believe that while there is evidence of Global Warming, it is a natural cycle of nature that we should have extremely hot summers, like the one we're having now that's causing massive electric power outages, and we might actually be heading for another Ice Age, as a response from Mother Earth to all the melting.

Others believe it is human occupation and use of the earth, in particular pollution from burning fossil fuels, that is causing an unprecedented warming, a hole in the protective ozone layer of our atmosphere, and a rise in temperatures which will, of course, also effect the sea.

I'll be posting a bit on the rise in sea levels this month!

BY THE SEA a poem by CHRISTINA ROSETTI ( 1830-1894)

BY THE SEA

by Christina Georgina Rossetti

Why does the sea moan evermore?

Shut out from heaven it makes its moan,
It frets against the boundary shore;
All earth's full rivers cannot fill The sea,
that drinking thirsteth still.
Sheer miracles of loveliness
Lie hid in its unlooked-on bed:
Anemones, salt, passionless,
Blow flower-like; just enough alive
To blow and multiply and thrive.
Shells quaint with curve, or spot, or spike,
Encrusted live things argus-eyed,
All fair alike,
yet all unlike,
Are born without a pang,
and die
Without a pang,
and so pass by.
