SUNKEN CITIES PROVE THAT PAST EARTH CHANGES INCLUDED A RISE IN SEA WATER LEVELS

Although I haven't covered this subject here at SIREN'S LINK TO SEA, it's part of our exploration of earth changes - climate and the oceans, the possible rise of sea levels.

DAILY MAIL SCIENCE : SCIENTISTS STUDY 7000 YEAR OLD CITY Excellent photos too!

Excerpts:  The city, known as Soline, was built on an artificial landmass by the ancient Hvar culture - but began to slowly sink off the coast of what is now Croatia as sea levels rose with the melting glaciers of the last Ice Age, starting around 12,000 BC.

...

Past explorations of its waters have dredged up Roman artifacts, a 2,200 year old shipwreck and another Hvar settlement in nearby Gradina Bay, 15feet below sea level and 'almost identical to the Soline settlement," according to the University of Zadar.

...

Their future work over the next few years will map both the Adriatic and North Sea, as they were between 10,000 and 24,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when sea levels were around 300 feet lower than they are today.

ATLANTIC OCEAN COLLAPSE? WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT

NPR : WHEN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN CURRENT COLLAPSE  by Lauren Sommer

Excerpt: Deep in the Atlantic Ocean, there's a massive current the size of 8,000 Mississippi Rivers. Its role in the Earth's climate is so powerful that it determines weather from the equator to Europe, crop production in Africa and sea level rise on the East Coast.

LEAVE TIDE POOLS ALONE and TAKE THAT TRASH WITH YOU

Visiting a tide pool recently, I was so upset to see a mother directing her two children to pick sea creatures from between the rocks and put them in plastic buckets.  Even if they have some sort of home aquarium set up, these people were ignorant that a TIDE POOL NEEDS TO BE LEFT ALONE.  It is an ECOSYSTEM and by removing any creature, they are upsetting that ecosystem.

PLEASE TAKE PHOTOS ONLY when you go to a tide pool!

WHAT IS A RIPTIDE and HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM UNDERTOW? 6000 WAVES A DAY BREAKON A BEACH....

SURFER TODAY

You go to the beach and you see warning signs about the conditions... Have you been sucked under?

***

This article explains the three types of dangerous tides or tows that can drag you out or under...

Excerpt:  Every day, some 6.000 waves break on a given beach.

The broken wave pushes water up the beach, and gravity pulls the water back down the beach as a backwash.

When big waves break on the beach, a large uprush and backwash of water and sand are generated: this seaward-flowing water/sand mixture is pulled strongly into the next breaking wave...

THE SOUND OF THE SEA - INTERVIEW CYNTHIA BARNETT and MARINE MOLLUSKS

Cynthia Barnett, an environmental journalist, who has written two books about fresh water, and one about rain.  The book Sound of the Sea is about the oceans.  Many people do not know that a sea shell is made by a living animal and are not rocks or stones. We love the shells for their beauty but don't know about the creatures that make them and live in them.

Beaches are sometimes covered with the living shelled animals crawling on the sand.
She will show you where the animal was with the shell when it was born.

COWRIE

The first MONEY was a white cowrie shells called "money cowries" and they were used all around the world.  According to Cynthia Barnett, they were used to buy human SLAVES!

OYSTERS

Since Clams and Oysters are seemingly the most common shells, it seems there is no harm in collecting them.  However, I believe we should only collect the shells that have washed up on the beaches, brought in with the tides, because killing sea creatures is not cool. Taking living animals with shells is still effecting the ocean environment and ecology.

VACATIONING AT THE BEACH AND WONDERING ABOUT THE RISE IN SEA LEVELS

So many people, especially those who live inland and indoors most of the year, go to the sea - the ocean - on vacation.

One of the most interesting news these days is the subject of "Global Warming."

Some people believe that while there is evidence of Global Warming, it is a natural cycle of nature that we should have extremely hot summers, like the one we're having now that's causing massive electric power outages, and we might actually be heading for another Ice Age, as a response from Mother Earth to all the melting.

Others believe it is human occupation and use of the earth, in particular pollution from burning fossil fuels, that is causing an unprecedented warming, a hole in the protective ozone layer of our atmosphere, and a rise in temperatures which will, of course, also effect the sea.

I'll be posting a bit on the rise in sea levels this month!
