NASA REVEALS GLOBAL SEA LEVELS ROSE BY UNEXEPECTED HIGHER LEVELS : HUNDREDS OF CITIES MAY BE OVERWHELMED

DAILY MAIL : NASA ...GLOBAL SEA LEVEL RISE UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH AMOUNT

The rise we saw in 2024 was higher than we expected,' said Josh Willis, a sea level researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

'Every year is a little bit different, but what's clear is that the ocean continues to rise, and the rate of rise is getting faster and faster.'

Since 1993, global sea levels have risen by a staggering 3.97-inches (10.1cm).

And if they continue to climb at this rate, hundreds of densely populated cities around the world could be plunged underwater. Excerpt: According to NASA, this 'unexpected' increase was due to an unusual amount of ocean warming, combined with meltwater from land-based ice such as glaciers.

SUNKEN CITIES PROVE THAT PAST EARTH CHANGES INCLUDED A RISE IN SEA WATER LEVELS

Although I haven't covered this subject here at SIREN'S LINK TO SEA, it's part of our exploration of earth changes - climate and the oceans, the possible rise of sea levels.

DAILY MAIL SCIENCE : SCIENTISTS STUDY 7000 YEAR OLD CITY Excellent photos too!

Excerpts:  The city, known as Soline, was built on an artificial landmass by the ancient Hvar culture - but began to slowly sink off the coast of what is now Croatia as sea levels rose with the melting glaciers of the last Ice Age, starting around 12,000 BC.

...

Past explorations of its waters have dredged up Roman artifacts, a 2,200 year old shipwreck and another Hvar settlement in nearby Gradina Bay, 15feet below sea level and 'almost identical to the Soline settlement," according to the University of Zadar.

...

Their future work over the next few years will map both the Adriatic and North Sea, as they were between 10,000 and 24,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when sea levels were around 300 feet lower than they are today.

Hidden Threat: Global Underground Infrastructure Vulnerable to Sea-Level Rise

As sea levels rise, coastal groundwater is lifted closer to the ground surface while also becoming saltier and more corrosive. A recent study compiled research from experts worldwide showing that in ...

READ THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA's GUIDE TO SEA LEVEL RISE : YES IT IS OVER A HUNDRED PAGES from CALIFORNIA OCEAN PROTECTION COUNCIL

OPC CAL GOV : SEA RISE GUIDE 2024

What difference does a foot or two make?  Well, the pounding surf, the incoming tide, wipes away the beaches and seacliffs as we know them to be, and my concern goes beyond the destruction of real estate.  These changes are natural processes but climate change may be happening rapidly and with it the destruction of our ecosystems.

HOW BAD WILL THE SEA LEVEL RISE BE FOR CALIFORNIA? SURFRIDER FOUNDATION RELEASES ANNUAL REPORT ON BEACHES

SURFRIDER ANNUAL REPORT  Not just the Pacific or California...  but California got an 'A'.

Go to the FULL REPORT.  Washington state improved. Florida and New Jersey got worse.

Go to the GUIDE to see what change you can make.

NASA on GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE : WHAT'S A ZETTAJOULES?

CLIMATE NASA on VITAL SIGNS OF OCEAN WARMING

Excerpt: Heat stored in the ocean causes its water to expand, which is responsbile for one-third to one-half of global sea level rise. Most of the added energy is stored at the surface, at a depth of zero to 700 meters. The last 10 years were the ocean's warmest decade since at least the 1800's.

MALIBU SEA CLIFFS SOON GONE?

MALIBU TIMES - SEA CLIFFS TO REDUCE BY 130 FEET by 2100

Using a computer modeling system that incorporates existing data, scientists predict that with limited human intervention, 31 to 67 percent of Southern California beaches may become completely eroded (up to existing coastal infrastructure or sea-cliffs) in just 80 years under scenarios of sea-level rise of one to two meters. The forecast predicts severe erosion on highways serving cliffside areas such as Palos Verdes Peninsula and suggests coastal cities such as Malibu could be affected with the loss of homes, businesses and parks—cliffside coastal properties—as rising sea levels batter and chip away at land mass.

VERY SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE on ARTIC MELTING and SEA LEVEL CHANGE

WOODS HOLE OCEAN : ARTIC MELTING and SEA LEVEL CHANGE

This one is very scientific but you can read it...
EXCERPT: Sea level is a natural integral indicator of climate variability. It reflects changes in practically all dynamic and thermodynamic processes of terrestrial, oceanic, atmospheric, and cryospheric origin. The use of estimates of sea level rise as an indicator of climate change therefore incurs the difficulty that the inferred sea level change is the net result of many individual effects of environmental forcing. Since some of these effects may offset others, the cause of the sea level response to climate change remains somewhat uncertain. This project is focused on an attempt to provide first order answers to two questions, namely:

1) What is the rate of sea level change in the Arctic Ocean? and
2) What is the role of each of the individual contributing factors to observed Arctic Ocean sea level change?

SEA LEVELS ARE RISING! WILL YOUR CITY BE 10 FEET UNDER WATER? CHECK THIS SITE MAP!

SEALEVEL - CLIMATECENTRAL- MAP  go to the map and see how deep under your city will be.

"Global warming has raised global sea level about 8 inches since 1880, and the rate of rise is accelerating. Rising seas dramatically increase the odds of damaging floods from storm surges. A Climate Central analysis finds the odds of “century” or worse floods occurring by 2030 are on track to double or more, over widespread areas of the U.S. These increases threaten an enormous amount of damage. Across the country, nearly 5 million people live in 2.6 million homes at less than 4 feet above high tide — a level lower than the century flood line for most locations analyzed. And compounding this risk, scientists expect roughly 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century — a lot depending upon how much more heat-trapping pollution humanity puts into the sky."

Go to the map and click on the number of feet the sea might rise, say 7 feet, or 60 feet (Yikes!) and you'll find out where the beaches might be, and if your town will be underwater!

VACATIONING AT THE BEACH AND WONDERING ABOUT THE RISE IN SEA LEVELS

So many people, especially those who live inland and indoors most of the year, go to the sea - the ocean - on vacation.

One of the most interesting news these days is the subject of "Global Warming."

Some people believe that while there is evidence of Global Warming, it is a natural cycle of nature that we should have extremely hot summers, like the one we're having now that's causing massive electric power outages, and we might actually be heading for another Ice Age, as a response from Mother Earth to all the melting.

Others believe it is human occupation and use of the earth, in particular pollution from burning fossil fuels, that is causing an unprecedented warming, a hole in the protective ozone layer of our atmosphere, and a rise in temperatures which will, of course, also effect the sea.

I'll be posting a bit on the rise in sea levels this month!
