Excerpt : Ninety-nine percent of the world's digital communications rely on subsea cables. When they break, it could spell disaster for a whole country's internet. How do you fix a fault at the bottom of the ocean? ... There are 1.4 million km (870,000 miles) of telecommunication cables on the seafloor, covering every ocean on the planet. Laid end to end, these cables would span the diameter of the Sun, and are responsible for the transfer of 99% of all digital data. But for something so important, they are surprisingly slender – often little more than 2cm in diameter, or about the width of a hosepipe.

IS THERE AN UNDERWATER CITY 6 MILES OFF THE COAST OF MALIBU?
HUFF POST: TRUTH MALIBU UNDERWATER ALIEN BASE
An excellent article by Lee Speigel explores a large strange formation like an undersea plateau that was discovered by viewers of Google Earth. Are Aliens living under there in a city or does science explain best?
An excerpt: "
"I didn't see anything special about it. I think it's because it looks like there's a flat surface and then, below it, it looks like there are these vertical columns, so somebody can say, 'Oh, this is the entryway to something special,'" said earthquake geologist David Schwartz of the U.S. Geological Survey.
"I think it's natural and is a part of the continental shelf," Schwartz told HuffPost. "It's just a complicated part of what's now offshore that has seen some erosion and, maybe, slumping when perhaps this was partially exposed when sea level was lower. This is a really major earthquake area and perhaps some of these features are a result of slope failures, due to shaking..."

JUNE GLOOM AND SMOG
A massive tornado hits the ground running and cuts a 16 miles path of destruction, followed by other smaller tornados that are just as mean. The Daunube River of Europe is flooding, effecting 10 countries today.
And here in Southern California there is "June Gloom" (a sort of foggy smoggyness that lingers mornings obscuring the sun, that "burns through") miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Boring compared to all that.
I feel lucky to live in Earthquake land at this point.
Of course, there are Earthquakes under the ocean waters too, which is what creates Tsunamis.
Every time there's a big enough Earthquake here, thousands of people make promises to themselves that they don't keep like moving away or wearing their clothes to bed, or buying all plastic dishware.
Feeling lazy today!

TSUNAMI EARTHQUAKES START THE SWELL
The earth experienced the earthquake in Haiti and the other day in Chili. Tsunami, huge swells of water that can hit the beaches and keep on going, are often in the aftermath of a earthquake at sea. By the time the waves hit Hawaii or Ventura County California or Japan the waves were small, and did little to no damage. Siren's linking to THE TSUNAMI SOCIETY so you can read some science.
