DEEP WATER : THE TRUE STORY OF DONALD CROWHURST

I watched this documentary film a second time, picking up more nuances! Donald Crowhurst was a weekend sailor in a catamaran who decided to join a challenge to sail around the world in whatever kind of boat with more experienced sailors. He had a wife and children to consider, but he wanted to challenge himself. I realized watching this that he probably knew he was in over his head before he left, seems there were a lot of things that were going wrong even before he set out. Maybe he knew he wouldn't make it, but besides the challenge of navigating treacherous oceans, there was the fact that he'd made financial commitments that would devastate his family and his business if he didn't set sail and stay in the race. So, once at sea and miserably behind, he began to cheat. In the end his ship's log tells the whole truth. His wife and best friend, now in their senior years, explain what they went through on land, wondering where and how he was. The question is, how much should we loose due to our own humiliation? Did he go mad? determine there is no God while subject to nature?
