OVERFISHING, HABITAT DESTRUCTION, and FISHING CAPTURE (BYCATCHING) ENDANGER OCEAN FISH : WORLD WILDLIFE FUND

SLOW REPRODUCTION RATE IS ALSO AN ISSUE...  The list is longer than I thought! There are EIGHTY on the endangered list and many more on the threatened list...

WORLD WILDLIFE FUND PDF FILE REPORT ON ENDANGERED SPECIES

Excerpt: Since 1970, global populations of marine species utilized by humans have halved, with some of the most important species experiencing even greater declines. There are over 400 known endangered marine species linked to human consumption of seafood. With mindful sourcing, you can help protect them for the future. As the world’s largest conservation organization, WWF combines its scientific foundation and global reach to help ensure that our modern food systems meet the needs of people while also respecting nature. Working with the seafood industry for more than 20 years, WWF has helped companies transition seafood supply chains to more sustainable, responsible and traceable operations. Company commitments to sustainability would not be comprehensive without the inclusion of protective measures for our planet’s most threatened species.

SHOULD WE BOYCOTT EATING FISH CAUGHT BY CHINESE OVER LABOR TRAFFICKING (SLAVERY)? I THINK SO!

Labor Trafficking means that people are tricked into or actually abducted to perform work without being paid, underpaid, or as slaves.  This is a serious issue.  And as much as I hate the idea that fisherman might loose their livelihood, I don't think anyone who thinks of slavery or labor trafficking as serious should be eating these fish.

According to this broadcast, frozen fish, most fish you eat at fast food restaurants, and fish you buy at certain named stores, probably has been fished by people who are being labor trafficked.

The investigation includes the fact that some of these people who are forced to labor are gone for a couple years at sea, their families do not know where they are, and they are desperately even sending messages in bottles to be freed.

PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS SPECIAL REPORT WHICH IS BREAKING NEWS TODAY and decide how you will protest!  Contact the stores and restaurants and tell them what you think!

ARE SCALLOPS ENDANGERED? YES and NO!

The term Scallop can refer to any bivalve, however, when it comes to scallops as endangered, it depends on which kind of scallop.  The Great Scallop found around the coasts of Great Britain is endangered. Shells build from calcium in the water.  Acidic water harms that process.  The seas are significantly more acidic then they were a hundred years ago.  So the shells are having difficulty making their shells.  The ocean is also absorbing most of the extra heat and the water temperature is harming the sea creatures.

Excerpt:  Scallops (Order Pectinida) have had a tumultuous existence over the past 245 million years, bearing witness to numerous transformations in ocean conditions and surviving two mass extinctions...

DID HUMANS EVOLVE TO BE AWAKE ON FULL MOON NIGHTS TO COLLECT SEAFOOD?

DAILY MAIL HEALTH - FULL MOON -TIDES- SEAFOOD  full interesting article by Pat Hagan

EXCERPT:

In a report on their findings they said: ‘It cannot be excluded that the change in the electromagnetic radiation, or the gravitational 'pull off' of the moon during this phase, may influence the release of neurohormones.

‘Several observations suggest the lunar tidal force affects certain biochemical processes.

‘The solar radiation reflected by the full moon and the lunar tidal force might modify brain activity.’

But Professor Jim Horne, former head of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, said it may simply be that humans evolved to stay awake on moonlit nights in order to capture seafood exposed on shorelines.

‘At least some of our early human ancestors lived by estuaries, where life was very dependent on the tides in terms of seafood.

‘A full moon means particularly high ‘spring’ tides and with the extra moonlight as well it would be worthwhile sacrificing some sleep at night for more food.’
